| ROYAN - Sainte
Radegonde's church, Talmont sur Gironde. Many pilgrims from
all over Europe followed the pilgrim route to Santiago de
Compostela across the Gironde Estuary. Saint Radegonde's church
was built in 1094 on the north bank at the entrance to the
Estuary. It was very soon visited by pilgrims who had passed
through Paris, Chartres, Orleans, Tours and Poitiers. These
travellers intended either to cross the Estuary or cross the
Gulf of Gascony by boat. They reached Talmont sur Gironde
via Aulnay de Saintonge, Saint Jean d'Ang?ly and Saintes.
Those who by-passed the Estuary went via Pons, in Haute Saintonge,
to Blaye and Bordeaux Continued Below

Sainte Radegonde's church, 16 km from Royan, is a massive
building, very pure in style, bathed in the Saintongeais
light. The rather squat building is dominated by a square
tower. The nave, which was shortened in the XVth century,
gives it an imposing silhouette. The fortifications added
at the end of the Middle Ages increase the impression
of strength. The transept has apse chapels built onto
the blind arcade round the semi-circular apse. The arches
over the doorway are decorated with angels worshipping
the Pascal Lamb. Recent restoration work has been carried
out to reveal acrobats, figures decorating the capitals
and representations of fabulous creatures which plunge
the visitor into the tangible universe of Romanesque art.
On the landward side of the church, the ramparts of the
medieval citadel of Talmont sur Gironde rise from the
rocky outcrop of a small peninsular.
The citadel was built in 1284, on the model of the old
bastions, on the order of Edward 1st of England. He was
then King of Aquitaine and reigned on the banks of the
Gironde. Talmont sur Gironde occupied a strategic position
at the entrance to the Estuary. The town grew in importance
and the centre and surrounding area grew wealthier. Talmont
sur Gironde was of strategic importance in the XVIth century
and during the wars between France and England.
