Charente-Maritime
We invite you to take a trip through its
history - from beaches to harbours, salt marshes to coastal
defences, oyster beds to vineyards and from Romanesque circuits
to blue lakes. Innovation in Charente Maritime is most definitely
a tradition - see the section on Setting up. The whole of
the Charente Maritime has contributed towards making this
region the most important tourist area on the Atlantic coast.
The organisation of events such as Sites en Scéne,
Fort Boyard, La Rochelle's Fancofolies, the Festival du
Cin?ma, the Grand Pavois, the Whitbread Trophy and major
international sailing events, the Saintes Académies
Musicales and the Montguyon Music Festival all contribute
daily to the heritage and vitality of Charente Maritime.

Charente Maritime continued:
Between Land and Sea, Rochefort Area & The
Charente River.
At the mouth of the Charente River, the
Rochefort Marsh saw the birth of one of the largest maritime
war harbours of the Kingdom of France.
The heaviest vessels were built in the Arsenal of Rochefort-sur-Mer.
This military base created out of nothing in 1666, 12
kilometres upstream, developed into the city of Rochefort.
It lead the most terrible navy battles experienced by
the Kingdoms of France and England, and caused the fortification
of the south-western French coastline.
The conquest of their territory by the
Charente Maritime inhabitants started with the conquest
of the marshes.
At the end of the Religious Wars, King Henry IV decided
to rebuild the territory. The first working site's main
purpose was to develop the Rochefort Marshes. The King
called on the expertise of Dutch engineers. Two Edicts
(1599 and 1607) charged Humphrey Bradley with drying out
the French marshes. A century later, the marshes of the
actual Pays Rochefortais were turned into cereal fields
and meadows. Lands gained from water increased more and
more. Throughout the eighteenth century, private initiatives
supported the planning of this large territory. Considerable
work was being accomplished at Rochefort. 3,000 to 4,000
soldiers worked in the construction
of 58 kilometres of dikes and 67 kilometres of canals.
64,000 acres were dried between 1782 and 1785.
