The French
secondary education system - A personal account -
When studying at secondary school level in France, four
years are spent in ‘College’, (sixième, cinquième, quatrième
and troisième) and three years are spent at the ‘Lycée’,
(seconde, première and términale). In most French schools
English is taught from the sixième and then, when pupils
reach the quatrième, they must decide between German and
Spanish to study as their second language. At the end
of the College, the Brevet exam is taken in French, History,
Geography and Mathematics. To pass, a pupil must obtain
an average of fifty percent or more in each subject. The
French education system is quite strict when it comes
to obtaining at least the average mark in every subject,
even in subjects such as Art, IT and Sport.

The French secondary education
system
continued..
At the end of every school year pupils get very nervous
as a meeting is held between all the teachers to decide
whether a student is ready to progress to the next year
or whether they should repeat a year (which happens
quite frequently), known as ‘redoubler’. Once pupils
reach the Lycée, they have three options; they can either
follow the languages pathway, which means that although
they still study all the other subjects including Mathematics
and Physics, languages have a higher coefficient than
other subjects. They can also choose between the Science
pathway and the Economics pathway. In première, pupils
must pass the French baccalaureate (written and oral
exam) to then go onto the final year where they will
complete all their other exams.
