Living in France

The British Embassy and British Consulates-General in France have prepared a series of Guidance Notes to help British nationals with living and working in France. These notes may also be useful for British nationals visiting France. Although much of the information applies to the whole of France, each of the consular districts has information specific to its area, so you should click on the area most relevant to you on the map below.

Several of the guidance notes refer to British nationals as defined within the regulations of the European Union.

How to Register a birth in France

1. The birth of a child born in France must be registered within three days of its occurrence at the Town Hall (Mairie) of the place of birth. It may then be registered at the British Embassy, Consular Section, Paris. This form of registration is not compulsory, however it is proof of citizenship and provides a permanent record of the event for the General Register Office (GRO) in the United Kingdom. Such registration will ensure that the birth is included among the records of the General Register Office in the United Kingdom....
