Vichy Continued
...Surrounded by many areas of natural
beauty, with verdant parks and gardens, Vichy is a town
in the countryside, but a real town with a complete and
very modern infrastructure, full of activities. While
remaining true to its origins as an internationally known
spa town, Vichy has begun to diversify its activities
since the start of the 1960's. In the field of sport for
example it has created a vast dedicated complex, the Parc
Omnisports (Sports Park) including Pierre Coulon's Centre
International de Séjour (International Visiting
Centre), or again in the field of language tourism with
the opening of the CAVILAM (Audio-visual Centre for Modern
Languages) where thousands of foreign language students
come to learn French.
During the last ten years the town has joined its partners
in a vast scheme to relaunch Vichy and make it a major
European centre dedicated to beauty, health, fitness and
leisure. Considerable investments have been made (close
to 2 thousand million francs in 4 years) in the spa treatment
/ health farm sectors, business tourism, and hotels, in
parallel with a very significant level of architectural
renovation and the redevelopment of the town centre.
The year 2000 will see the completion of a major project
by the District de l'agglomération (Urban District)
: the opening of the Lardy - Célestins university
and technology centre. Focussed on the new skills of biotechnology
and applied communications, the Lardy - Célestins
centre will be the motor for economic development in the
conurbation.
