THE ALLIER IN HISTORY The Allier is a region whose history is intimately bound up that of the lords and dukes of Bourbon. The strategic situation of the province allowed the family line to enjoy the benevolence of French kings for five centuries, as a guarantor of the territorial security of the Kingdom of France confronted by English-ruled Aquitaine and the duchy of Burgundy. In a reversal of fate, Henri IV was to put the Bourbons on the throne of France some years later. 7 kings of France were Bourbons: Henri IV, Louis XIII, Louis XIV, Louis XV, Louis XVI, Louis XVIII and Charles X. The Allier has for the most part kept the boundaries of the former province of the Bourbonnais. This very defensible territory is dotted with old castle keeps, medieval fortresses, châteaux, country manors and country seats… Over 500 castles and stately homes adorn the landscapes of the Allier, and some 60 of them are open to visitors. SOUVIGNY- CLUNIAC PRIORY COMPLEX

The lands of Souvigny, ceded to the monks of Cluny by Aymard, lord of Bourbon, were used for the building of a monastery. Two of Cluny's first five abbots, Mayeul and Odilon, died at Souvigny and when they were canonised attracted numerous of the faithful as pilgrims. The tomb of the two abbots was discovered in the church crypt in 2001 and is the subject of an exhibition in the adjoining museum. The church is also home to the necropolis of the dukes of Bourbon.
