SOUVIGNY- CLUNIAC PRIORY
COMPLEX
The lands of Souvigny, ceded to the monks of Cluny
by Aymard, lord of Bourbon, were used for the building
of a monastery. Two of Cluny's first five abbots, Mayeul
and Odilon, died at Souvigny and when they were canonised
attracted numerous of the faithful as pilgrims. The
tomb of the two abbots was discovered in the church
crypt in 2001 and is the subject of an exhibition in
the adjoining museum. The church is also home to the
necropolis of the dukes of Bourbon.
