Made up of three departments, the Haute-Vienne, Creuse and the Correze and to the west of the Massif Centrale the Limousin takes its name from a Celtic tribe called the Lemouices, which occupied the area at the time of the Gauls. Archeological sites indicate the man first settled in the region from 150,000BC at Chalucet in the Haute Vienne and at Crozant in the Creuse. Remains from later fortifications (from 450BC to the Roman Conquest can be found at Puy du Tour near Argentat (Correze), Puy de Gaudy near Gueret (Creuse) and Villejoubert near Saint-Leonard (Haute Vienne).

LIMOGES

Capital of the Limousin region, Limoges city of more than two thousand years was once more significant stages on the roads of Saint-Jacques de Compostelle. With its hospitals, its inns and its chapels, the pilgrims stopped in.

It was in years 1750 that by chance somebody discovers the richness of the ground: kaolin - raw material necessary to the manufacture of the porcelain. Since 1768 manufacture starts and in very short time Limoges becomes the world capital of the porcelain.

At the beginning of 19TH century the large ones manufacture was built . Two centuries after, the porcelain became the international calling card of Limoges. Limoges produced today more half of the porcelain made in
France.
